John Donne
JOHN DONNE(1572- 1631), the pioneer of a new kind of lyrical and satirical verse called ‘Metaphysical’, was born in London into a prosperous Roman Catholic family of traders at a time when England was staunchly anti-Catholic. Donne was forced to leave Oxford University without a degree because of his religion.

He studied law, and read theology. He also participated in two Naval expeditions and became secretary to a powerful noble, a job he lost when he was briefly sent to prison for secretly marrying his patron’s niece.
वे कानुन तथा धार्मिक शिक्षा ग्रहण किए। वे दो समुद्री यात्रा पर निकले और एक शक्तिशाली कुलीन के सचिव बन गए। उनकी नौकरी छूट गई जब वे अपने संरक्षक के भतीजी से चूपके शादी करने के कारण थोड़े समय के लिए जेल जाना पड़ा।
In 1615, at the age of 42, Donne accepted ordination in the Anglican Church and soon became one of the greatest preachers of his time. In love – lyricism, Donne broke completely with the Petrarchan tradition, introducing an intellectual and colloquial tone.

Sweetest love, I do not goe,
For wearinesse of thee,
Nor in the hope the world can show
A fitter Love for mee;
But since that I Must dye at last, “tis best,
To use my selfe in jest
Thus by fain’d deaths to dye.
मेरी प्यारी महबूबा मैं इसलिए नहीं जा रहा कि मैं तुम से थक गया हूँ। न हि मैं इस उम्मीद में जा रहा हूँ कि दूनिया मुझे तुम से अधिक प्यार देगी।
लेकिन चूँकि मुझे अंततः मरना ही है। इससे अच्छा है कि मैं इस मृत्यु का बहाना मानकर स्वयं को बहलाना (मरने के बाद के दर्द को मजाक समझता हूँ।) अच्छा समझता हूँ।

न ही उसके पास कोई छोटा रास्ता है।
तुम मेरे लिए मत डरो, लेकिन मेरा विश्वास करो
मैं उससे तेज यात्रा करूँगा।
चूँकि मेरे पास उससे ज्यादा तरीके हैं।
O how feeble is mans power,
That if good fortune fall, Cannot adde another houre,
Nor a lost houre recall!
But come bad chance,
And wee joyne to it our strength, And wee teach it art and length,
It selfe o’r us to advance
ओ, मनुष्य की शक्ति इतनी कमजोर है कि यदि भाग्य गिर जाता है यानी भाग्य साथ नहीं देता है, तो वह उसमें एक घंटा भी नहीं जोड़ सकता है तथा न ही बीते लम्हें को वापस बुला सकता है। परन्तु जब बुरा समय आता है, हम मजबुत बनाते हैं। और हम अपनी कला और शक्ति से उसे सबक सिखाते हैं। इसलिए हम उस पर काबू पा लेते हैं।
When thou sigh’st, thou sigh’st not winde,
But sigh’st my soule away, When thou weep’st, unkindly kinde,
My lifes blood doth decay.
It cannot bee
That thou lov’st mee, as thou say’st, If in thine my life thou waste,
Thou art the best of mee.
जब तुम सिसकियां लेती हो, तुम्हारी सिसकियां हवा नहीं होती है।
