3. “POLYTHENE BAG”
Durga Prasad Panda
Durga Prasad Panda occupies a prominent position in Oriya literature. Primarily a linguist, Panda also writes poetry in English and sometimes translates Oriya poems into English and vice versa. His famous works are ‘Sawarani’ and ‘Rays’. In the present poem, “Polythene Bag”, he touches on the pressing issue of polythene bag and the evil consequences it has on environment. The strength of the poem is the correlation between human emotion and a mundane thing like a polythene bag.
दूर्गा प्रसाद पांडा को उड़िया साहित्य पर महत्वपूर्ण अधिकार है। मुख्यरूप से एक भाषाविद् पांडा इंगलिश में भी कला रचतें हैं और कभी-कभी उड़िया कविताओं का अंग्रजी में और पुन: अंग्रेजी का उड़िया में अनुवाद करतें हैं। कवि की प्रसिद्ध रचनाएँ ‘सवर्णी’ और ‘रेज’ है। वर्तमान कविता ‘पोलिथिन बैग’ में वह पोलिथिन बैग के ज्वलन्त विषय और पर्यावरण पर इसके बुरे परिणामों को स्पर्श करता है। इस कविता का बल मानव संवेदना और पोलिथिन बैग जैसी पार्थिव चीज के बीच का अन्तर सम्बन्ध हैं।

“POLYTHENE BAG”
‘Hurt’ is such a strange polythene bag
which never gets
dissolved into the earth’s crust
ऐसा अजीब पोलीथीन बैग एक चोट है
जो कभी नहीं हो पाता
धरती की सतह पर नष्ट
When touched it makes a squeaky noise,
when burnt it exudes a pungent smell,
when left to itself
it pollutes the environment.
जब स्पर्श किया जाता है यह चीख जैसा शोर करता है,
जब जलाया जाता है यह तीखी गन्ध फैलाता है,
यह ज्यों को त्यों छोड़ दिया जाता है,
यह पर्यावरण को दूषित करता है।
Just like the polythene bag
his ‘hurt’ too melts down
o with a little touch of warmth.
बिल्कुल पोलीथीन बैग की तरह
उसकी चोट भी पिघल जाती है
थोड़ी सी गर्मी की स्पर्श में
But deep inside the grief’s garbage bin
far away from everyone’s gaze
the germs of the disease
keep on growing
किन्तु दु:ख के आन्तर्गत के कचरे दान में
हरेक की दृष्टि से बहूत दूर
रोगों के किटाणु
बढ़ना जारी रहते हैं।
The polythene bag
remains buried within
यह पोलीथीन बैग
भीतर दफनाया रहता है।
Only the pain caused by the ‘hurt
keeps coming back
again and again.
मात्र उस चोट से उत्पन्न दर्द
बाहर निकलता रहता है
बार-बार।
