John Corbett, who has been teased about this role for months, is reprising his role as Sarah Jessica Parker’s (Carrie’s) former Sex & The City flame in And Just Like That.
The official writers’ room podcast and THR have both published interviews with creator Michael Patrick King, as well the writers, about this momentous occasion.
The biggest takeaways from the conference
Once Season 2 was confirmed, MPK knew Aidan would be back.
“As soon as I heard we would be doing season two, I had only one thought in mind: Aidan…it made me feel like the season was going to be exciting. This is great for a showrunner.” As a writer, this creates a complex past that we are bringing to the present,” said he.
The writers knew the paparazzi would capture the reunion.
“We knew Sarah Jessica Corbett would be seen filming on the street, so we said, ‘Well it’s out there in the world.
Sarah Jessica Parker talked about what she thought the reunion would feel like.
“I believe they would project an obstacle and find that it is not as big. They are adults. They have a lot of life experience, including separate lives, children and the loss of their husband. It’s the accumulation of everyday life experiences that makes you more prepared to deal with someone you value, love, or are affectionate towards. “I think you prepare for an obstacle which may not even exist.”
Julie Rotenberg was unsure about bringing John Corbett back. Michael Patrick King, however, made sure that John Corbett’s style changed upon his return.
She was concerned about treading on old ground and wanted to ask, “Haven’t we done him ?’…we given John a makeover. We took away the turquoise jewelry and cut his hair. We told him to be tough when he returned. He said it was a choice of story: “If we’re going to bring someone back, we need to find a way to do it in a different way.”
Michael Patrick King teases that there are “tricks in our sleeves.”
MPK stated that “we are bringing Aidan, back again. We have tricks up our sleeve as to how we can make him new, and what we can do with the storyline, considering — and this is a big consideration — all the time they’ve spent together, the pain and suffering, and how Carrie hurt him before — according to the fan boards… twice –, and how badly the breakup affected Aidan.”
They never thought about bringing Aidan back for Season 1.
MPK said that “there was no way in hell he could ever have existed in Carrie’s mind.” Julie added: “I don’t think she would have ever reached out to Aidan again if Big had not died.”
Aidan’s story will be explored in detail in Episode 8.
The tone should immediately be different. Carrie says, “I want to have a date with this guy.” Right away. She doesn’t downplay it. She says, “I agreed to the date.” I knew Valentine’s Day was coming. Carrie says in the scene, “I want to go on a date with Aidan.” It’s been thirteen years since Carrie has seen Aidan. It’s a little shocking to consider what we are about to do, which is to have John Corbett and Sarah Jessica appear in a scene 14 years after their last appearance. It’s impossible, as no one has played a role for over 25 years. Sarah Jessica did,” MPK said.
On Thursdays, Max will stream new episodes of And Just Like That.
